So, you’ve been using that handy "Sign in with Google" button for a while now. It's quick, it's easy, & it saves you from remembering a million different passwords. But lately, you've been thinking about taking back a little control over your digital life. Maybe you're looking to de-Google your life a bit, or perhaps you just want to have a separate password for each of your accounts for security reasons. Whatever your reason, you've decided it's time to switch from Google Sign-In to a good old-fashioned email & password login.
Here’s the thing, it's not always as straightforward as you might think. Some services make it a breeze, while others can be a little more… stubborn. But don't you worry, I've been down this rabbit hole, & I'm here to guide you through it. This is your comprehensive guide to untangling your accounts from Google's grasp.
Why Even Bother Switching?
Before we dive into the "how," let's quickly touch on the "why." You might be perfectly happy with Google Sign-In, & that's totally fine. But there are a few good reasons why you might want to consider making the switch:
Security: If your Google account is ever compromised, a hacker could potentially gain access to ALL the accounts you've linked to it. That’s a pretty scary thought. Having separate passwords for each service limits the potential damage of a single account breach.
Privacy: When you use Google Sign-In, you're sharing some of your Google account information with that third-party service. While Google has policies in place to protect your data, you might just prefer to keep your accounts as separate as possible.
Account Lock-In: If you ever lose access to your Google account, you could be locked out of all the services you've linked to it. That's a major single point of failure you might want to avoid.
Sharing Account Access: Sometimes you need to share access to an account with a team member or family member. You definitely don't want to give them your Google password to do that. Having a separate login makes this a whole lot easier & more secure.
Honestly, it just comes down to having more control over your own accounts. & in a world where our digital lives are so intertwined, a little extra control can go a long way.
The Golden Rule: Create a Password FIRST
If you take only one thing away from this article, let it be this: ALWAYS create a password for your account before you unlink your Google Sign-In. I can't stress this enough. If you unlink your Google account first, you could find yourself completely locked out with no way to get back in.
Think of it like this: right now, your key to that account is your Google login. If you throw away that key before you've made a new one (your password), you're going to have a bad time.
So, how do you do this? The method can vary slightly from site to site, but here's the general game plan:
Log in to the account using your Google Sign-In, just like you normally would.
Head to your account settings. This is usually found by clicking on your profile picture or a gear icon in the top right corner.
Look for a "Security," "Login Methods," or "Password" section. This is where you'll find the option to add or change your password.
You'll likely see that you don't have a password set. There might be a button that says "Add a password" or "Create a password."
If you don't see that option, don't panic! The most common workaround is to use the "Forgot Password" or "Reset Password" function. Go to the login page of the website, & instead of clicking "Sign in with Google," enter the email address associated with your Google account & click "Forgot Password." This will usually trigger an email to be sent to you with a link to create a new password. PRETTY COOL, right?
Once you've successfully created a password, you can then log in to the account using your email & that new password. Test it out to make sure it works before moving on to the next step.
Unlinking Your Google Account: The Two-Pronged Approach
Now that you have a new key to your account, it's time to get rid of the old one. There are two places you'll want to do this: on the service's website itself (if possible) & in your Google account settings.
1. Unlinking from the Service's Website
The best-case scenario is that the website has a clear option to unlink your Google account. Here’s where you’d typically find it:
Go back to your account settings.
Look for that "Security" or "Login Methods" section again.
You should see that your Google account is listed as a connected login method.
There should be an option to "Disconnect," "Unlink," or "Remove" your Google account. Click that button, & you're golden.
2. Unlinking from Your Google Account
Whether or not you were able to unlink directly from the service's website, you should ALWAYS do it from your Google account as well. This ensures that the connection is truly severed. Here's how:
Go to your Google Account settings. You can get there by going to
1
myaccount.google.com
.
On the left-hand menu, click on "Security."
Scroll down to the section called "Your connections to third-party apps & services."
Click on "See all connections."
You'll now see a list of all the apps & services you've used Google Sign-In with. Find the one you want to unlink.
Click on the service, & then click "See details."
You'll see a big blue button that says "Stop using Sign in with Google." Click it, & confirm your choice.
And that's it! You've successfully switched from Google Sign-In to an email & password login.
Platform-Specific Guides: Let's Get Granular
Now, I know what you're thinking. "That's great in theory, but what about my favorite services?" Every platform is a little different, so let's walk through a few of the big ones.
How to Switch from Google Sign-In on Spotify
Spotify is a pretty common one, & thankfully, they make it relatively easy.
Log in to your Spotify account on their website.
In the top right corner, click on your profile & then "Account."
On the left-hand menu, click on "Login methods."
You'll see "Google" listed. If you haven't already, you'll need to set a password. You can do this by going to the password reset page & entering your Google email address.
Once you have a password set, you can come back to this "Login methods" page & disconnect your Google account.
How to Switch from Google Sign-In on Amazon
Amazon's a little different because they don't really use a "Sign in with Google" button in the same way. However, you might be using your Gmail address as your Amazon login. If you want to change that, it's a simple process.
Log in to your Amazon account.
Hover over "Account & Lists" & click on "Your Account."
Click on "Login & security."
Next to your email address, click "Edit."
Enter your new email address & follow the on-screen instructions. You'll likely need to verify the new email address.
It's worth noting that if you created your Amazon account through Google Sign-In on a platform like Readwise, the "forgot password" method is your best bet to create a separate login.
How to Switch from Google Sign-In on Facebook
Facebook also has a pretty straightforward process for managing your login information.
Log in to your Facebook account.
Click on your profile picture in the top right & go to "Settings & Privacy," then "Settings."
In the Account Center, go to "Personal details" & then "Contact info."
Here, you can add a new email address. You'll need to confirm it.
Once confirmed, you can make that new email your primary contact.
After that, you can remove your old Gmail address if you'd like.
To ensure you have a password set, you can go to the "Password & security" section in the Account Center.
What If a Service Won't Let You Unlink?
This is the frustrating part. You might come across a service that simply doesn't have an option to switch from Google Sign-In to an email & password. It's not super common, but it happens. Here are your options:
Contact Customer Support: This should be your first step. Send them an email or open a support ticket & explain what you want to do. They may be able to manually make the change on their end. A lot of the time, this is the solution.
The "Change Email" Trick: If you can't unlink Google but you can change the email address on your account, you might be able to work around it. Change the email to a different one you own, & then try the "forgot password" trick with that new email. This can sometimes sever the connection to your Google account.
The Nuclear Option: Create a New Account: I know, this is the last thing you want to do. But if the service has no way to unlink your Google account & you're determined to make the switch, you may have to create a brand new account with an email & password. If you go this route, be sure to transfer any important data from your old account first.
Speaking of Data, Don't Forget to Back It Up!
Before you start this whole process, it's a good idea to back up any important data from the account you're working with. For most services, this isn't a huge concern, but for things like cloud storage or platforms where you've created a lot of content, it's better to be safe than sorry.
If you're looking to move data from one Google account to another, you can use Google Takeout. It's a handy tool that lets you download all of your data from your Google services.
A Quick Note on Business & Website Engagement
If you're a business owner, you're probably thinking about this from the other side. How do you make sure your customers have a seamless experience while also giving them control over their login methods? This is where having a robust customer service strategy comes in.
You want to make it easy for your customers to get help when they need it. For many businesses, this means having a 24/7 support system. This is where a tool like Arsturn can be a game-changer. Tying It All Together
